1957:
EMT 140 is released by Elektromesstechnik (“Electrical Measuring Technology”) of Germany. A large, thin metal sheet is caused to vibrate by a moving coil transducer placed near the center of the plate. A bending wave propagates through the plate, reflecting off the edges, developing a complex pattern of reflections across the two dimensions of the plate. Not measured in CPU usage or rack spaces, this plate reverb weights several hundred pounds and is almost 4 feet high by 8 feet long.
1961:
EMT 140S is released. A second, strategically placed pick-up lets the same metal sheet go stereo.
