Notes: Spring reverb is featured heavily in the Stratocaster-based playing that has defined the surf music sound. Dick Dale has said that the surf sound is all about the playing technique, the scales, and the Strat. The first performances were totally reverb-free. They extracted a spring reverb tank from an organ, first for his voice, in search of support and sustain. Leo Fender and Freddie Tavares added springs to their amps soon enough.
The surf sound today, is Strat + Spring Reverb, and Misirlou is a touchstone.
