Distortion
The album opens with attention-getting chaos.
Drums are introduced as distorted, compressed and gated fragments of kick and snare hits, disguising the groove for several bars.
The lead vocal - when the words come in, not the purer 'oohs' - has a character-transforming, distorted tone that Bono has no trouble inhabiting.
Both distortion effects are rumored to have been created, in part, by overdriving the input (analog to digital converters) of an Eventide H3000 Ultra-Harmonizer.
