Columbia LP Record

65 years ago today (21 June 2013), Columbia introduced the 33-1/3 RPM LP record format. Since then, many other formats have come, and most have gone. An incomplete list includes:
- Compact Cassette
- 8-Track Cassette
- Compact Disc
- Digital Audio Tape
- MiniDisc
- Digital Compact Cassette
- DVD-Audio
- Super Audio Compact Disc
- Blue Ray
With sales a fraction of what they were at their peak, the LP remains a viable and slightly growing format. Meantime CD, DVD, and BluRay sales are softening, and all seem destined to be replaced by streaming and downloaded experiences.
There is a terrific interactive timeline of Columbia worth scanning. And don’t miss this video on the manufacture of records.
Looks like a long life for the LP. Happy Birthday.
